Lively and lovely
Yesterday a bunch of Jane Austen readers crammed into a friend's house for a lively, quote-punctuated discussion Mansfield Park, but before it began I had to take a picture of this jacaranda tree below. Sorry the color is muted--we've got some relief from the heat by marine layer. Though there is no hope of rain until November or December, every cloud is welcome.

Jacaranda

That's a beautiful tree - I've never seen one of those before!

They are called jacaranda, and they are all over Southern California. They bloom twice a year, spring and "fall" which basically means at the start of our hot summer and during the hottest portion of summer when everyone else has autumn. Since we had several fierce heat waves over the past few weeks, this year's blooms are especially brilliant.

Thanks for sharing the picture - it's something really neat that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

My favorite shade of lavender, too.

Oh, fun! (The Jane Austen discussion.)

Beautiful tree.

It was a lot of fun!

Lovely picture! I have a jacaranda tree, but alas, it has never bloomed. Someday...
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 25th, 2014 06:24 pm (UTC)
Even in this recent heat? Wow!
celestialgldfshcelestialgldfsh on May 25th, 2014 08:03 pm (UTC)
I'm near Phoenix, but yeah. Never bloomed. I read somewhere that they need to be mature to start blooming, so every year I hope this is the year!
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 25th, 2014 08:04 pm (UTC)
Well you certainly don't lack hot weather a-plenty! So maybe the tree has been too young. Indeed, I don't recollect seeing small ones in bloom--they are all fairly hefty in size.

and sounds like a very fun sort of discussion too :)

Wow! Lovely color, but I'm impressed that it's grown so tall without being hacked off.

Yes!

Wow, that's beautiful. I love the colour. It's like a Bougainville, but a TREE.

Yup. A row of them is really spectacular==and when they shed, it's purple snow.

I was just in Southern California this week, and saw these trees everywhere! I'd never seen them before and fell in love.
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 26th, 2014 12:04 am (UTC)
They are one of our best things!

Great picture.Mot seen one of these trees before.

They are pretty common here.

I love jacarandas.

There's one at Sydney Uni, in the Old Quad (the bit of the university that's a copy of an English uni) and when it blooms everyone knows it's too late to study and that exam time has arrived.
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 26th, 2014 12:37 am (UTC)
That's cool! I wonder if the climate is like ours.
gillpolackgillpolack on May 26th, 2014 12:43 am (UTC)
Sydney is a bit different to you, climate-wise, but about as warm (the warm end of temperate).
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 26th, 2014 12:45 am (UTC)
I have to admit I'd really love to visit there some day.
Annann1962 on May 26th, 2014 02:27 am (UTC)
I've never heard of those before. Like Dr. Seuss almost...
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 26th, 2014 03:15 am (UTC)
They are pretty boring as trees go (though not ugly like palms) but twice a year--glory!
Helen: fairy thornheleninwales on May 26th, 2014 10:51 am (UTC)
I have heard of jacaranda trees, but had no idea their blooms were that colour! If we have any in this country, I doubt that it would ever get hot enough for them to flower. (And indeed a quick google suggests that they won't even grow here, let alone flower.)
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 26th, 2014 12:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah, they seem to need the ten months of hard summer that we have.

How lovely -- being able to take part in a discussion of Mansfield park! I've been wanting to reread that one again.
Sherwood Smithsartorias on May 27th, 2014 03:58 am (UTC)
Oh, such a good discussion, too--no Fanny haters (though a couple of people strongly disliked Edmund, but felt that if Fanny wanted him, well, then they wanted her to have him!) It was so much fun.
